Healing in Community/Sanando en Comunidad (1 hour, 30 mins)

This group meets weekly starting Monday, Oct 19.
Time: 4:00pm EST
Eligibility: Individuals from mixed status families.

A weekly support group for individuals and family members impacted by deportation and the detention of loved ones. Drawing on Internal Family Systems and Structural Family Therapy, members will build compassion for the parts of them carrying grief, fear, and guilt, strengthen family roles disrupted by separation, and learn practical calming resources — including tapping/bilateral stimulation from EMDR — while finding strength in community with others who understand.

Session 1 on 10/19: Creating Our Safe Space: Group agreements, confidentiality and its limits, and honoring each person’s story at their own pace. Psychoeducation on how chronic stress and separation affect the mind and body. Introduction to grounding and a first resourcing skill (tapping/bilateral stimulation) so members leave with a tool from day one.

Session 2 on 10/26: Naming What We Carry: Ambiguous loss — grieving someone who is absent but still living. Normalizing that this grief has no clear ending and is not “something to get over.” Validating that these losses occur within unjust systems, not because of personal failure.

Session 3
on 11/2: Living With Uncertainty: Fear, hypervigilance, and the exhaustion of waiting — for calls, court dates, news. Distinguishing what is and isn’t in our control; building daily rituals of stability. Practice of calm-place resourcing with BLS.

Session 4 on 11/9: Honoring Our Protectors: IFS-informed exploration of the parts that have helped us survive — the part that stays strong for everyone, the part that numbs, the part that overworks, the part that carries anger. Reframing these not as symptoms but as protectors that carry heavy burdens.

Session 5 on 11/16: Releasing Guilt and Self-Blame: Offering Self-energy and compassion to the parts that carry “I should have done more” or survivor’s guilt. Locating blame where it belongs — in circumstances and systems — rather than in ourselves or our families.

Session 6 on 11/23: Carrying It Forward: Integration — what each member has learned about their parts, their family, and their own resilience. Building each person’s ongoing support plan and resource toolkit. Closing ritual honoring both the pain and the strength in the room.
